Not what you might think. Also quips from Tetsu Kayama.
UPDATE: At Sega's GameJam 2 event in Japan this weekend, Yu Suzuki, AM2's president and father of the Virtua Fighter series, announced development on a Virtua Fighter "RPG" to mark the series' 10th anniversary in 2003. It is being developed for GameCube and will feature every VF character to date. While not a fighting game, Suzuki said it's an action-adventure emphasizing story and he specified it's NOT a "kids" type of game, contrary to the interview with Tetsu Kayama. We may believe it bears some similarities to "Shenmue." AM2 is aiming for a 2003 release. -- Julius Bautista

In a recent issue of Weekly Famitsu, Sega's Chief Operating Officer Tetsu Kayama offered his thoughts on the direction of the Virtua Fighter series. He mentions that he'd like to see an online version of AM2's seminal fighting series. A planned Virtua Figher RPG is planned however according to sources from within Sega, for the Gamecube. However, it is believed that the Virtua Fighter series may never reach the Gamecube in its intended form due to the age group of individuals who own the sometimes lacking system.
On the subject of a Gamecube version of Virtua Fighter 4, Kayama stated, "I dont see the sense of a direct port to Nintendo's console." He does postulate that a new installment of Virtua Fighter Kids might be appropriate for the younger demographic of the Cube.
