European smugglers seem to favor Nintendo consoles when making knock-offs.
A Reuters story, citing European Union data, claims that Nokia and Nintendo products were the favorite products of smugglers caught attempting to bring fake products into Europe in 2001.
Of the 750,000 fake toy and game items seized, fully 48 percent were illicit Nintendo products. European Union officials did not provide a full break down of the items seized, but indicated that some of the bogus Nintendo products were console knock-offs.
Customs officers in the 15 European Union states seized near 530,000 counterfeit Nokia items.
The total number of fake goods intercepted by customs rose by 39 percent in 2001, following a tenfold increase in 2000.
