Nintendo of America is launching the next chapter in the history of its most popular character, as Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube starts finding its way to retailers today. The game begins with Mario and Peach arriving at the tropical resort, Isle Delfino, for a period fo rest and relaxation. However, once they arrive the island is a mess and the inhabitants say a person resembling Mario is responsible for the island’s disarray. Armed with his FLUDD device, Mario embarks on a journey to clean up the island and attempt to clear his good name. Since his first appearance in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, Mario’s games have sold over 158 million units and generated more than $7 billion in revenue—not including titles he has only guest-starred in. Super Mario Sunshine has been at the top of the Japanese sales charts since its release, and will no doubt move a slew of GameCube’s from now until Christmas. A GameCube bundle that includes the game and a memory card is also available for $189.95.
