Nintendo's latest console sold quite a bit of units, however, the console race is just beginning.
The Nintendo Gamecube launched on November 18th to many awaiting gamers across the country. We have the official numbers from that videogaming weekend! Reports from Wal-Marts in California suggested that sellouts were common during the opening launch day. Nintendo, according to official numbers was the highest selling console during the week of November 18th, although it's 469,000 units fell short of Sony's 532,000 units in one day for it's console, the Playstation 2. However, Microsoft was only able to manage just over 300,000 units that same week. This means that Nintendo outsold the Xbox for the first week of the Xbox and Gamecube launches. However, it only took one week for the Xbox to overtake the Gamecube in sales as the Microsoft Xbox sold nearly 500,000 (800,00 total) in it's second week as new shipments flooded retail stores (NPD Group Inc).
Regardless, the Gamecube is doing fairly well. It was responsible for Luigi's Mansion being the #2 selling game at launch for both the Xbox and Gamecube (behind #1 Halo), and the console sold 1.9 games per console (second to 2.4 for the Xbox). We shall see how the consoles do at the conclusion of this holiday season.
