RenderWare makes impact on kill.switch
by Jolex Del Pilar

Monday, October 6, 2003

RenderWare development software utilized by Namco in making of game.

Criterion Software announced that RenderWare Studio and RenderWare Graphics have been used to develop kill.switch, a third-person tactical military shooter from developer and publisher, Namco Hometek Inc. The game is being developed for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox videogame system from Microsoft and is due for launch next month.

The use of RenderWare Studio and RenderWare Graphics has enabled the team to efficiently manage the game's build process and overcome the technical hurdles within the development cycle. By being able to focus their time and energy on delivering superior graphics and this unique gameplay, Namco has been able to use more resources on developing the game rather than the technologies behind it.

Matt Sentell, Senior Producer at Namco comments, "When we started development we knew that we had a challenge on our hands. The ambitious approach we were taking with the 'cover' driven gameplay was enormously exciting and, at the same time, represented a risk on our part. We had to ensure that maximum effort was focussed on making the gameplay really work and giving the player a greater degree of freedom within the game environment, as opposed to developing technology and managing the actual mechanics of the build process. RenderWare was a strategic decision to help support us in doing this."

Andy Price, VP North America, Criterion Software comments, "The Namco team has been totally committed to breaking new ground with kill.switch's fantastic gameplay. Our hope is that other developers and publishers will recognize these efforts in terms of helping to drive the quality and creativity of the games we deliver as an industry, and be inspired and encouraged to take a chance with their own new gameplay ideas and creative concepts. We believe RenderWare plays a critical role in terms of supporting the industry in doing this."
