Apparently so according to DMS study.
AOL Games has released some interesting results of a survey entitled Casual Games Report. 3,600 casual gamers were questioned about their gaming habits. To qualify, gamers had to have played online games in the past 3 months.
Perhaps the most surprising statistic to emerge from the study is that, while men spend more time on the Internet than women—23.2 hours versus 21.6 hours—women gamers over the age of 40 spend more time per week playing games than men; 9.1 hours (computed to 41.0 percent of their online time) to 6.1 hours (26.0 percent of online time) for men. Teenage respondents reported playing online games an average of 7.1 hours per week. Women apparently enjoy the social interaction that comes from playing online games, with one in five women over 40 years old reporting that an online friendship had transformed into an offline relationship. Stress relief was also a popular reason for playing online games, cited by 62.0 percent of the same female age group. 44.0 percent of the same group said online games caused them to spend less time viewing TV or movies, exercising or spending time outside. In general, male respondents preferred casino, arcade and sports games more than their opposite sex counterparts, while women tended to play word and puzzle games more than men. Breaking down poll responses by geographical location, AOL Games cited Atlanta and Boston residents as spending the most time playing online games, averaging about eight hours per week. Digital Marketing Services conducted the survey.
