13 Filipino testers receive $600,000 over "racial" claims.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced the settlement of an employment discrimination lawsuit filed against Sega of America and the staffing firm Spherion Corp. The EEOC lawsuit alleged that Sega directed Spherion to fire a group of temporary employees who were working as testers. The EEOC claimed that 13 Filipino testers were fired “because of their national origin,” while another five testers were booted “in retaliation for their friendship with an employee who had threatened to file a complaint alleging preferential treatment of Filipino employees.” Both companies settled with admitting any wrongdoing. Sega will pay the lion’s share of the $600,000 settlement, contributing $456,000, while Spherion pays the balance. Both companies will also conduct training in order to prevent future discrimination. EEOC district director H. Joan Ehrlich commended both Sega and Spherion for “working to resolve this matter.”
