Is Legend of Mana a sequel to Secret of Mana? by

...or is the game simply a side step for the franchise?
I read the article you wrote on the upcoming Sword of Mana and I liked it. Except there was one thing you left out. There was a sequel to Secret of Mana called Legend of Mana and it was released in the states. http://www.square-enix-usa.com/web/games/LOM/

Thanks for the heads up Nick. I guess I was thinking of direct sequels which is why I didn't mention Legend of Mana. LOM seemed like a side step for the series with it's "icon" towns, and landmarks. The designers were trying to go too "non-linear". Gamers didn't seem to respond too warmly to this drastic change as LOM got panned by reviews at the time. Sword of Mana is going back to the roots that made Secret of Mana such a beloved series, a cute, yet dramatic, story driven game. Sometimes linear is good.
