New WinFS data system also in question.
Various sources have reported that Microsoft Corp. will not ship its next version of the Windows operating system, Longhorn, until 2006 and that its features will be scaled back to boot. Microsoft does not want to rush Longhorn to market. The new OS was originally planned for release this year, and now PC users will have to make do with the current Windows XP until sometime in the second half of 2006. To ensure a timely release, Longhorn will be missing some of its much discussed features. In particular, WinFS, a new data storage system, will no longer be included in Longhorn. WinFS was supposedly to have made information a good deal easier to find on PCs and networks. Apparently, work on WinFS is still going forward, but when or in what form users will benefit from this new storage technology is not yet clear.
