A study on piracy conducted by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and IDC Global Software indicates that 36.0 percent of all software used worldwide in 2003 was pirated.
The researchers estimate that while $80.0 billion worth of software was installed around the globe last year, only $51.0 billion of that total was legally purchased, meaning that for every two dollars worth of software bought, one dollars’ worth was obtained illegally.
Eastern Europe was the region with the highest estimated piracy rate, with a whopping 71.0 percent, followed by Latin America (63.0 percent), Middle East/Africa (56.0 percent), Asia Pacific (53.0 percent), Western Europe (36.0 percent) and the U.S./Canada (23.0 percent).
China and Vietnam ranked as the countries with the single highest piracy rate—92.0 percent, while the U.S. had the lowest rate—22.0 percent. The U.S. however ranked first when attaching a dollar figure to sales lost to piracy, with an estimated total of $6.5 billion, followed by China ($3.8 billion) and France ($2.3 billion).
