NPD Group reports drops in Video Game sales

1st Quarter console and portable sales down from last year.
The NPD Group reports that total U.S. retail sales for the console and portable game segments dropped in the first three months of 2004.
The category totaled sales of over $1.8 billion in the January-March, 2004 period, a one percent drop from the $1.9 billion put up in the same period of 2003.
In the hardware category, console hardware sales dropped 25.0 percent in year-over-year results, to $336.0 million in this year’s first quarter, from $445.0 million one year earlier.
Portable software sales were also off, dipping six percent to $157.0 million, from $167.0 million previously.
Other categories reported on, with gains indicated in dollars, included console software (up 7.0 percent), console accessories (up 10.0 percent), portable game hardware (up 8.0 percent) and portable game accessories (up 8.0 percent).
